LaGuardia Community College
Fundamentals of Human Biology II
SCB204

Welcome to Fundamentals of Human Anatomy and Physiology II (commonly known as SCB204) at LaGuardia Community College.

This course has a lecture and a laboratory component.

The lecture portion is subdivided into 36 "talks" on various topics in Human A & P. The talks indicate what the student should learn. They are based on required readings from your textbook as indicated in the lecture syllabus. The pacing of the talks is indicated by the dates in this syllabus.

Each talk has a number of Objectives (which are distributed in class) and suggested activities associated with it. The activities include a number of different kinds of puzzles, the purpose of which is to help you learn the textbook material.

The mock quizzes provide you with a tool for measuring how well you have mastered the material.

Your instructor is available to you. You can contact your instructor in person, by telephone, snail mail or email. The secretaries in E300 will help you to get in touch with your instructor.

There are 6 lecture quizzes, which count for 30% of your final grade. These quizzes usually consist of multiple-choice questions. Your instructor will give you the details. Each quiz covers several talks (i. e., the material from 1- 3 chapters).

In addition to the quizzes, there is a midterm and a final examination. Each of these counts for 15% of your final grade. Both the midterm and final are cumulative.

The session in which each examination will occur is listed in the lecture syllabus.

The laboratory portion of SCB204 is subdivided into 12 laboratory sessions as indicated in the laboratory syllabus. The laboratory sessions are based on required readings from your laboratory manual.

The order of the laboratory sessions is indicated in the laboratory syllabus.

You are urged to drop-in and use the LaGuardia Drop-In Science Study Hall in M238.

The laboratory activities for each laboratory session are based on the required readings. The specific activities for which you are responsible are listed in the laboratory syllabus. Your laboratory instructor will give you the details.

There are suggested review activities listed in the laboratory syllabus as well.

Students are encouraged to attend the LaGuardia Science Study Hall in M238 where there are (peer Tutors) available that hold indivdual, group and review sessions.
F
urther, a complete set of anatomical models and specimens is available for student use in the LaGuardia Science Study Hall M238. In addition, a number of online links are provided to help you in mastering the gross and microscopic anatomy and physiology of the human body. The Science Study Hall M238 also has a library of CD-ROMS and computer modules that illustrate the anatomy and physiology of the human body.

There are 4 laboratory examinations, each worth 10%.(for a total of 40% of your final grade).

The details of these examinations are posted in the laboratory syllabus as well as the session in which they will occur.

SCB204 is a challenging course, so study hard and make use of all the pedagogical aids that are available.

Attention and punctuality are neccessary for success; absence or lateness exceeding 10% is considered excessive. Classes will meet in accordance to the Academic Calendar (be sure to get a copy from the
Information Desk in the Main Building) unless otherwise specified. Severe weather does not cancel classes;
listen to your radio/TV for College closings.

Student rights and responsibilities can be found in the College Handbook and Catalog, please refer to them.

The Grading Policy for these course can be found on page 3 of your course outline. Repeat, "R", grades are not given in this course and Incompletes, "IN", are issued only under very restricted circumstances. In order to receive an Incomplete, a student must have PASSING GRADES and be able to document why he/she is unable to complete the course work during the semester. Both the student and the instructor must complete and sign an Incomplete Form and list the exams that must be satisfactorily completed before a grade is issued. Students have 6 months to take the missing exam; otherwise the incomplete is automatically converted to an F. An Incomplete does not provide a student with an opportunity to retake an exam(s); all prior grades are retained and added into the calculation of the final grade
