Nursing finds its origins in the very earliest of times when referring to 
   a nursing mother, as in the "wet nurse." It comes from the Latin word,
  "nutrire" which means "to nurture." The English word, "nurse," used first in
   the 13th century, went through many changes before it became the word
   we recognize today. Earlier spellings of the word were "norrice," "nurice"
   and "nuourice." Before the 20th century, when the term "nurse" was used in
   non-English writings to refer to providers of health care, especially during
   wartime, those caretakers were typically men.
